Abstract: The primary goal of the study is to provide an estimate of the economic impact of reef diving and snorkeling in Florida. This will be done by collecting expenditure data from divers, snorkelers, and (potentially) private boaters, related to their trips taken to coral and artificial reefs. The study will also provide estimates of recreational use (e.g., number of dive or snorkel trips taken to coral reefs) and data on users’ attitudes and preferences for coral reefs. These estimates will be used to update a previous (2001) data collection effort. By providing a tangible measurement of the economic impacts of reef diving and snorkeling the study will assist agency decision makers and lawmakers – local, state and national – when deciding on budget allocations, environmental mitigation and research support priorities.
