Federally-permitted vessels in the Pacific Coast Groundfish Fishery are required to identify their vessels by displaying their official number. The number is used by NOAA, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other agencies for fishery enforcement activities. Vessel identification requirements are set forth in the regulations implementing the Pacific Coast Groundfish Fisheries Management Plan at 50 CFR 660 Subpart C.
