Regulations governing fisheries of the Northeast United States require that Federal fishing permit holders using specified fishing gear mark that gear with specified information (e.g., the vessel's official number, Federal permit number, or other information as specified in the regulation). The regulations also specify how the gear is to be marked (e.g., location of marker on gear and visibility). Marking fishing gear aids law enforcement, navigation, and also helps identify gear involved in damage, loss, or civil proceedings.
