Terms of Clearance: The pilot study of both the telephone and clinical component are approved at this time. See attached CDC memos of 10-10-00, 10-26- 00, 11-29-00 and description of revised pilot study from 1-22-01. Approval of pilot is for 10 months at which time CDC will resubmit general survey (OMB waives the requirement for the initial Federal Register notice (also known as the 60-day notice) Upon resubmission to OMB, CDC shall report on the results of the pilot survey, including response rates, analysis of nonresponse, and assessment of potential bias in the prevalence estimates of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Abstract: The purpose of this submission is to request OMB authorization to collect information for a comprehensive nationwide study of chronic fatigue sysdrome and other fatiguing illnesses. This is a two part study; the National Telephone Survey of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and the Clinical Evaluation Study. The goal of the National Telephone Survey of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is to identify, using random-digit-dial techniques, a sample of respondents who have fatiguing illness and a similarly size group of non-fatigued controls, and conduct a telephone interview with them.
