Abstract: Antimicrobial resistance is becoming a global concern. In the U.S., infections with bacteria resistant to antimicrobials are becoming very common in hospitalized patients. The importance of the intensive care unit in antimicrobial resistance is the focus of Project ICARE, which began in 1994. To date, this study has evaluated the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance among selected pathogens processed in the microbiology lab. The proposed Phase 3 will again enroll 40 hospitals and will address many confounding factors and serve as a sentinel surveillance system for different antimicrobial resistant bacteria.
