Terms of Clearance: This information collection request is approved consistent with the discussions on 12/23/95 between OMB and CDC. We understand this reliability and validity study is a preliminary effort to assess the various stress scales and measurements currently available. It is understood that the limited scope and voluntary nature of the study will need to be assessed in terms of potential biases and limits on the extent to which the findings are intended to help support a subsequent larger and fully representative epidemiological study of stress and higher risk births and birth outcomes. This study alone cannot serve as the basis for prevention and intervention strategies to reduce poor birth outcomes.

Abstract: THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY IS TO EVALUATE THE RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY OF MEASURES OF STRESSFUL LIFE EVENTS AMONG REPRODUCTIVE AGE BLACK WOMEN, INCLUDING PREGNANT BLACK WOMEN. THE DATA COLLECTED WILL HELP PLAN PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION STRATEGIES TO REDUCE THE INCIDENCE OF POOR PREGNANCY OUTCOMES AMONG BLACK WOMEN.
