Terms of Clearance: DURING A MEETING BETWEEN HHS/NIOSH AND OMB STAFF, NIOSH STAFF DESCRIBE THE FOLLOWING REVISIONS TO THE NATIONAL OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH SURVEY OF MINING: 1. DURING THE FIRST YEAR OF THE STUDY, NIOSH WILL DESIGNATE 20 COMMODITIES THE PRODUCTION OF WHICH INVOLVES THE GREATEST NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES. 2. NIOSH WILL SELECT 150 OF THE LARGEST MINES PRODUCING THESE COM MODITIES TO BE SURVEYED. 3. NIOSH WILL PREPARE A REPORT OF THE SURVEYs FINDINGS AT THE END OF EACH YEAR OF DATA COLLECTION. THIS REPORT WILL BE SUBMITTED TO MSHA AND WILL PRESUMABLY BE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC. THIS REQUEST FOR CLEARANCE, REVISED AS DESCRIBED ABOVE, IS APPROVED FO USE THRU SEPTEMBER 1985. CONSIDERATION BY OMB TO EXTEND CLEARANCE FOR FURTHER DATA COLLECTION WILL BE BASED ON THE DEMOSTRATED USES WHICH MSHA HAS MADE OF THE DATA RESULTING FROM THIS SURVEY.

Abstract: NIOSH AND MSHA NEED A RELIABLE MEANS OF ASSESSING AND PRIORITIZING POTENTIAL EXPOSURES OF MINE WORKERS TO CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL AGENTS. THE DATA WILL BE USED IN ESTABLISHING RESEARCH PRIORITIES, AND BY MSHA AS REQUIRED BY SECTION 101.(A)(6)(B) OF THE 1977 MINE SAFETY AND HEALT ACT.
